Tarp Definition: Tarpaulins, which are commonly referred to as tarps are large sheets of natural or synthetic fiber that have been treated extensively to make them waterproof and withstand wind, hail and the sun.

There are many different types of Tarpaulins that have different applications and uses. There is also an abundance of tarpaulin manufacturers in South Africa with many quality tarpaulin suppliers in Gauteng alone. Tarpaulins are very versatile and can be used for so many different applications in the private and commercial sectors. Most people find having a tarp very handy as tarps can be used for camping, gardening and events – amongst other uses. In the transportation and logistics industry tarps are also used extensively. They are usually secured to a truck to protect goods from sun, wind and rain or they are used as tautliner curtains on a truck for the same purpose. Most major companies use tautliner curtains that are branded. This helps to make a company’s brand more visible during transportation. Essentially, it’s like free advertising while you’re transporting your goods! Newer tautliner curtains are also manufactured so that they are theft-proof. They are so strong that thieves cannot cut into the canvas easily and steal goods. Tarps are also used for camping as a groundsheet cover or for additional shelter against wind and rain. Car enthusiasts and boat enthusiasts love to use a tarp to protect their precious vehicles and pool owners love to use tarps as a pool cover. When correctly manufactured a pool tarp can protect against drowning, pool damage and evaporation. There are so many uses for tarps that it is impossible to list all. A tarp sheet is simply one of the most practical items to own in a home or business.

So how are tarps made? Firstly, tarps are made using different types of material. The five most common materials used to manufacture tarps are polyethylene, canvas, vinyl, nylon and mesh. Here are the pros and cons of some of the different fabrics:

Polyethylene (commonly known as poly tarps)

This is not a fabric, it is actually fine sheets of plastic woven with thin strips of plastic in a process similar to weaving fabric. They are bonded and treated as well so that they are waterproof and resistant against drastic incremental weather changes. These are usually UV-treated to withstand UV damage. Tarps that are not UV treated eventually become brittle due to exposure to water and the sun. Once your tarp has become brittle it gets damaged very easily.

PVC Tarps

These tarps are manufactured using polyester fabric which is reinforced and closely woven, making them incredibly strong. It is then bonded or coated with PVC plastic sheets to make it even more durable. These tarps are waterproof and weatherproof. They withstand rain, wind hail and some are even fire retardant. PVC tarps are manufactured using polyester fabric which is reinforced and closely woven, making them incredibly strong. It is then bonded or coated with PVC plastic sheets to make it even more durable. These tarps remain supple because they withstand the elements so well that they do not get brittle for a long time when taken care of correctly. PVC tarps are commonly used to make tautliner curtains for trucks as they are so durable and strong.

Mesh Tarps

As the name suggests, this tarp is woven similarly to a mesh with nylon threads. This allows breathability and free flow of water and air through the tarp. A mesh tarp is commonly used for parts of camping tents to reduce wind.

Other factors to consider when purchasing a tarp are the thickness and size of the tarp. The thickness of the tarp will determine durability. A lighter tarpaulin is best for indoors while a thicker tarpaulin is best to use outdoors. The thickness of tarpaulin ranges from 0.10 to 0.40mm, with 0.40mm being heavy-duty and best for exposure to harsh elements. The weaving of the tarp also affects its strength. The finer the weave when the tarp is being manufactured, the stronger the tarp will be. The treatment that your tarp receives during manufacturing will also affect its durability. For example, if you are purchasing a tarp for a pool cover ensure that it has been treated to be UV resistant. If your tarp will be used outdoors to protect firewood ensure it is both flame retardant and water-resistant. It is also important to note that there is a difference between a cut size and a finished size when purchasing tarps. Cut size is the size before the manufacturer bonds and sews around the edge of the tarp. The finished size is the size after this has been done. When you are purchasing a tarp ensure the size you are requesting is the finished size.

Many people like to look for used canvas tarpaulin for sale but it is important to know what you are buying and what to look for in a good tarp. Inspect the tarp for any major defects or wear and tear. Ensure that the tarp is still supple and is not going brittle. It is also helpful when purchasing a second-hand tarp to know how to do basic repairs. Most used tarps would have withstood the wear and tear over time and you will need to repair it at some point. The process is quite easy and you can save money by doing your own repairs. There are some major hardware and outdoor supply stores that have tarp repair kits for sale. Consider investing in one if you own a tarp so you can handle patch-ups as quickly as possible. This will minimize further damage to the tarp as well. There is also polytarp repair tape available in various colors which are ideal for small holes or tears in the tarp. A common misconception is that tarp repair tape is the same as duct tape, which is not the case. Tarp repair tape is actually woven polyethylene fabric coated on one side with a very strong adhesive. They are perfect to use on polytarps and for onsite repairs to all tarps. When repairing any tarp ensure that the area is clean and dry. Cover the hole or tear on both sides of the tarp and ensure proper adhesion. For larger tears or holes you may have to purchase a patch and glue it onto your tarp. A patch will need to be applied to both sides of the tarp for a more durable repair. Most reputable tarp and tent manufacturers will have all the supplies you need to repair a damaged tarp. In addition to patches or tarp repair tape, you may also require new grommets or a grommet repair kit and eyebolt screws. Try and keep these on hand if you have a second-hand tarp that is showing signs of wear and tear. If DIY repairs are not your thing, there are companies such as Cargo Tarp and Net, that do tarps repairs in Jhb & Dbn. Rated among the best tarpaulin manufacturers in Johannesburg & Durban, we offer new tarpaulin for sale in Johannesburg & Durban as well as a 24/7 tarp repair service! When transporting goods and cargo there’s a lot of things to consider, not only do you have to organise the transportation of the goods but also the packing, route and reception by whomever or wherever it is being sent to. Before the journey begins to make sure that everything you’re sending and transportation is properly packaged. You might be wondering how to pack a truck for long distance moving.

Depending on the type of cargo you have there are many different types of packaging you will consider using. In this post, we’ll talk a bit about the different types and usages of packaging for cargo as well as how to make sure that your goods and cargo reach their destination safely and in compliance with local standards.

9m straps and ratchets for cargo

Before you being to pack the cargo, it is important to consider whether it falls into a particular category. For example, breakaway cargo that needs to be unassembled, loaded, transported and then reassembled once it reaches its destination or whether it is a heavy lift item that requires a special system of the vehicle to move it from one location to the other. This is very important as you risk the safety of your cargo and goods if you overlook this step. When you’re transporting goods like glass or good you need to make sure that they’re wrapped properly. Glass would need to be placed in a soft or a cushioned box so that it may not move and crack in transit.

cargo grab hooks

Food needs to be refrigerated and kept at a constant temperature. There are many options available for each type of cargo and their specific needs.

Bagged goods like rice, maize and wheat do well at holding their content together but doesn’t do much for the safety of the contents. They can be protected by placing them in wooden crates or on pallets if they’re secured properly can lessen the impact of the journey on them.

You can use fibreboard boxes and cartons for most types of cargo as they are able to withstand a lot of wear and tear that normal transport can have. They are also relatively cheap which makes them great for large quantities of products are not fragile.

Wooden crates are used mainly by international exporters since they are pricier than cardboard. They are usually used to things like stationery, contents of furniture etcetera. Wooden crates and pallets are can be used to stack boxes and technology equipment as they’re easy to stack.

Drums are also a great method for transporting latex, chemicals, whisky, detergents, oil, molasses, casings, paints, powders, granules and other solids such as chemicals, cement, some ores and scrap metal.

Shrink wrapping are used to secure items in transit, it is usually used for smaller items and not to secure the items to the truck but rather to whatever is holding them down.

Humidity is a major concern for machinery and cargo like that, they are usually vacuum sealed and/ or wrapped with silica gel in the packaging to avoid corrosion.

Let’s assume that you have taken all the necessary precautions when packing your cargo. All that’s left now is to make sure that it is ready for the journey.

Assuming That you’re sending cargo a long distance then we recommend that you cover your trucking vehicle with a high-quality tarp and cover to make sure that nothing can affect it. Usually, goods are of high quality and very important to the business. You have to ensure that you do your best to make sure that it is safe from not just the journey but also from the natural elements.

Another thing to consider is that you should have strap tie downs to make sure that your goods don’t move unexpectedly or dangerously during transit. Tie downs have a rated amount that they can hold, make sure that you anchor your cargo to the vehicle safely and in a secure manner.

Tying down your cargo with ratchet straps is important. They are many types of them. Two common types of tie down straps are loop straps and two-piece straps.

Loop straps, like their name implies, are a single piece of webbing that is looped around the item to be protected and the two endpoints are brought together at the tie down fastener for fastening and providing tension.

A two-piece tie down strap is a single assembly that is constructed out of two separate pieces of webbing each with their own hardware that is fastened at one end to the area surrounding the equipment to be protected and connected to each other, typically at the fastener.

Tie down webbing is available in single ply and double ply strengths and is used to make 1,2,3, and 4-inch tie down straps

Webbing with a linking device is used for the fastening of goods with trucks, trailers, pallets, boxes and containers. This is also known as ratchet lashing, ratchet straps, ratchet tie downs, tie down straps and lashing with webbing.

Making sure that your cargo can get safely from you to where it needs to be is important. Contact us today for all your ratchet tie downs and transport rope needs.

We all know what tarps are but why are they so important? You’ve probably seen tarps more often than you realise… they’re used in the logistics industry for things such as coverings for trucks or used in the construction of tents and even similar materials are used for promotional items. Tarps are a large sheet of strong, flexible, water-resistant or waterproof material, often cloth such as canvas or polyester coated with polyurethane, or made of plastics such as polyethene.

They’re famously used in tautliner trucks for as curtain sides that allow the contents of the truck to be accessed from the sides. They have strong aluminium corners that protect and enhance the trucks structural integrity. They’re also used to hold goods or as covers for bakkies or cargo nets and as the material that most large marquees and tents are made of.

So why use tarps? Well in this article we’re going to highlight why tarps are important, what you need to know before buying one and their benefits, and also what a digitally printed tarp can add to your business. Let’s look at where tarps are used in the logistics industry.

Tarps are durable and protect against many weather elements. since they’re often used for logistics and transport, you need a waterproof and strong material that can protect your cargo. Tarps are great because they’re used on large freight trucks, small bakkies and pool and dam covers. It might be tempting to just use a string net when transporting gifts but those nets often lack structural integrity and if torn can cause a huge rift which can lead to damaged or lost cargo. If you are looking for a net we suggest using a heavy duty cargo net.

Tarps are great because they are extremely versatile and highly advantageous investment. Tarps aren’t just used for trucks and logistics, they’re also used for marquees and tents. We offer a wide range of marquees and tents that would help you with planning your next outdoor event. Tarps are great because they’re perfect for erecting in suitable outdoor locations and you don’t have to worry about being restricted to just one venue and it’s confined place.

Tents and marquees can be used for weddings, corporate events, church gatherings and even festivities. Since we keep a wide range of tents, from peg and pole tents to frame tents you can choose the perfect tent to suit your needs.

If you’re choosing a tarp you should consider the following:

– Make sure you measure the size of your vehicle: Do not just estimate the size, be sure to measure it. You will be investing money in a tarp that will last you for a long period of time and it should be the right fit. Tarps are an initially expensive product but they pay off in the long run.

-Good quality: Make sure you do your research and buy a high-quality tarp. Don’t be swayed by sales talk, rather speak to a professional who offers good advice and you’ll have ease of mind knowing that you can rest assured that you made the right decision.

– Check the details: Your tarp should be able to suit the temperature of the area you travel and live in, check the maximum and minimum temperature it can withstand.

-Choose a good colour: If you are one of those that live in a dusty place than you might prefer a darker covering or if you’re committed to investing in your tarp, consider getting it digitally printed.

We offer the service of digitally printing tarps, you may not realise but the importance of branding your tarp is often underestimated. If you’re using your tarp on a vehicle, it will be on the road for extended periods of times, this serves as a great advertisement opportunity and people will be able to see your brand and contact you just by you having your trucks moving around. You have the opportunity to turn your vehicle into a mobile billboard. We also print posters, banners, and signs for display and promotional needs for corporate or private events. We know your brand is important and making sure it’s visible and easy to recognise is one of our valued missions. We believe that the right promotion can be a valuable investment as since tarps are known to be durable, they’re a great idea for printing on.

If you purchase a tarp from us then you’d be glad to know that in case of any accidents, we also offer a 24-hour emergency hotline in case you need an immediate repair. We’re also professional tarp repairmen who can conduct tarp repairs in Durban and cater to all your other tarp and net needs.

We hope you have a deeper appreciation for the wonderful material tarp is and the benefits potentially has for you and your company.

Even as we move into the new digital era, businesses must still rely on a strong presence of physical signage to help bring in clientele. Signage is one of the most important elements of a successful marketing strategy for local businesses as it can be used in two areas of marketing namely branding and advertising. As with any other form of media, there are a few basic laws that you would need to abide by.

Local laws may stipulate where you place your signage on both vehicles, logistics vehicles and also physical location. Certain buildings may have their own set of laws stipulated by the buildings governing body so always check in with them prior to even getting your signage started.

Aside from local laws, the positioning of your signage is also extremely important, as well as the overall look and feel of your signage. Getting a professional signage company to assist with the design as well as installation of your signage is a must as they are well experienced with any and all factors that would affect your signage, such as positioning and even colours. Background colours for your design are important to consider, remember that black contrasts very well with any light colour and white works extremely well with having a dark value. Don’t use any background colours that could possibly make it difficult for the viewer to focus on the main message! Knowing the environment in which your signage is going to be positioned in helps when designing your signage as it assists with the selection of contrasting colours that help your brand stand out. A few questions to ask when designing your signage would be things such as: Where is the sign going? How close is your signage going to be to your viewers? Will this signage be able to be utilized across various environments?

The location of your signage is extremely important as the area you have chosen to place it in contributes to people’s awareness of your brand. Be it on a vehicle or on your building, wherever you place your signage is what people are going to relate your business to so always ensure the areas and or vehicle looks neat! A perfect spot for signage is on the side of logistic trucks, their large trailer sides allow for a large piece of signage that is constantly being seen by a vast audience while transporting your goods. These large types of jobs need to be done by professionals in the field of signage in order to save you money, sending jobs to inexperienced signage companies may result in you paying twice to get the job done professionally the second time around. Companies such as Cargo Tarp and Net are experts in the field of signage and have put together some of the most vibrant and expertly executed signage Durban has ever seen! Projects as large as Coca Cola and Frimax trucks have been orchestrated by Cargo Tarp and Net.

The size of your signage is also extremely important, sometimes a sign that is far too large can be a distraction and ends up swindling the attention away from your message. The strategic placing of a sign must also come into consideration when planning out your signage, a place that forces people to stop and look around, such as an intersection would be ideal for signage. Well crafted signage has also been seen on the back of truck trailers, the signage on the back of truck trailers are ideal as vehicles passing by or driving behind them are drawn to these.

Another factor to consider when putting together the artwork is the actual text style of your signage. The style of text can actually cause people to either read the message you are conveying or simply pass by without a second glance.

Always remember that simple signage is a lot more efficient than complex designs as this distracts the viewer from your overall message. On most signage seen on trucks, buildings, cars and buildings today, you will notice that it has been kept simple and to the point. A viewer is able to gather an entire message by merely glancing at the signage for a few seconds.

Material being used to construct your signage is a waging factor in the development of it, many signage companies may opt to use cheaper materials than others which can always lead to a shortfall on your signage’s life span.

Remember that your signage represents your company, so always ensure that you opt to go to professional signage company. Cargo Tarp and Net has a strong presence as an industry leader of signage in Durban and is always willing to go the extra mile.

When transporting cargo, it is important to ensure that the cargo is safely and securely transported to the desired destination. To ensure this, tie down straps (also called ratchet straps, lashing straps or tie downs) are used to hold down and secure cargo during transportation.

Ratchet straps are perhaps the most versatile tie-down options that can be used in a range of applications. They are mainly used in the transportation industry for securing cargo. There are other tie-down options people use as well, such as ropes and chains, but sticking to ratchet straps will serve you better for a few reasons.

First off, ratchet straps are easy and convenient to use; their ratcheting mechanism provides enough leverage to make fastening even the heaviest of equipment a breeze. You can even tighten and secure them with one hand. The drawback of using ropes is that they don’t offer the advantage of leverage and require some knot tying skills. Chains, on the other hand, are heavy and you need to use lever chain binders to secure them in place. This is much harder to do than just using a ratcheting mechanism that only needs a few cranks to get things right and tight.

A working load limit is located on the webbing of a ratchet strap. It is the safe working load strength that the tie-down strap is rated for and any tie-down strap without a working load limit should not be used. If the working load limit is not visible or legible, then the tie-down strap is not safe to use for any cargo transportation uses.

A working load limit is based on one-third of the breaking strength of the tie downs. In other words, until the strap is unable to handle any more weight and becomes broken in the process. A working load limit was created to keep safety in mind when hauling tie-down straps. Without a working load limit, you could easily be going down the road not knowing what your tie down straps are rated for and lose your cargo load, potentially injuring others in accidents, as well as potential fines or even jail time.

Where does the one-third of the break strength come from? It was created with the idea that although the straps can handle more weight, unforeseen circumstances could occur. An example of this would be going down the road and an accident in front of you happens and you have to slam on your brakes. This would cause a lot of force on the cargo load attempting to move forward, which is hard for any tie-down strap to handle with ease. One-third of the break strength ensures that the cargo remains secure and helps prevent any factors from playing a role in the strength of your tie-down straps.

A few more examples of this could include going down the highway and being cut off by other motorists causing you to quickly lane change without warning. Life doesn’t always go exactly as planned and due to some of these unforeseen circumstances, you always have to have a plan of action. The last thing you want from transporting cargo is someone to get hurt and your cargo to remain safe.

Ratchet straps are another type of cargo straps and the most common use for ratchet straps by far has to be to secure cargo. Ratchet straps can be used if the load is on the back of a pickup truck or a big rig trailer, there is no job too big for a Ratchet Strap. Cargo securement has come a long way in the last 50 years and ratchet straps have been deemed as one of the most popular ways to keep loads secured and prevent moving from occurring to prevent accidents from occurring.

At Cargo Tarp and Net, “excellent customer service” is not just a catch phrase. Our around-the-clock service differentiates us from our competitors. We also offer the lowest prices with the best quality – put us to the test and call us today for all your cargo strap needs.

South Africa is an arid country and is one of the 30 driest countries in the world. Coupled with that, the country as a whole has not recovered from the 2014 drought, with the Western Cape Province currently experiencing the worst drought in 400 years.

A drought is a natural disaster of below-average precipitation in a given region, resulting in prolonged shortages in the water supply, whether atmospheric, surface water or groundwater. A drought can last for months or years or may be declared after as few as 15 days. It can have a substantial impact on the ecosystem and agriculture of the affected region and harm to the local economy. Annual dry seasons in the tropics significantly increase the chances of a drought developing and subsequent bush fires. Periods of heat can significantly worsen drought conditions by increasing evaporation of water vapor.

Droughts and water shortages can have major environmental, economic and social impacts on South Africa. These impacts are:

  • In the case of environmental effects: lower surface and subterranean water-levels, lower water flow-levels, increased pollution of surface water, the drying out of wetlands, more and larger fires, higher deflation intensity, loss of biodiversity, worse health of trees and the appearance of pests and ecological diseases.
  • Economic losses include: lower agricultural, forests, game and fishing output, higher food-production costs, lower energy-production levels in hydro plants, losses caused by depleted water tourism and transport revenue, problems with water supply for the energy sector and for technological processes in metallurgy, mining, the chemical, paper, wood, foodstuff industries etc., disruption of water supplies for municipal economies.
  • Social costs include the negative effect on the health of people directly exposed to this phenomenon (excessive heat waves), a possible limitation of water supplies resulting in water shortages, increased pollution levels, high food-costs, stress caused by failed harvests, etc.

As a result of the drought conditions being experienced throughout the country, dam levels all over South Africa are declining rapidly in most provinces whilst the drought effects continue.

Dam levels in Gauteng and the Eastern Cape are on the decline while provinces like Mpumalanga have seen a slight increase since the summer rains from previous weeks. Kwa-Zulu Natal dams have remained stable despite the hot summer weather conditions that the province has been facing. Although there have been rainy periods since the beginning of the summer season, Kwa-Zulu Natal temperatures have been climbing up to higher degrees. The hot temperatures have led to a slight decline in some dams around the province.

With the drought conditions affecting the agriculture sector in South Africa, it is important that farmers are proactive when it comes to the conservation of water in their dams. A simple solution to preserving the quality of water and minimizing water loss in dams is used is to use a good quality dam liner. Dam liners are a simple way to provide waterproofing of dams and ponds where the soil type is not ideal for water storage, providing the waterproofing essential for a viable dam.

HDPE or High-Density Polyethylene is used to make a thick waterproof plastic sheet for the lining of dams. HDPE is a geomembrane liner which is used for solid waste containment, mining and water containment. Geomembrane is a synthetic product engineered using geotechnical ingredients to produce a low or non-permeable synthetic membrane liner, which is used as dam liners amongst other applications.

Dam liners at the bottom of the dam or pond will help to stop seepage or leaking of water into the surrounding soil. The use of a dam liner also reduces evaporation and external contamination when used as a dam cover.

At Cargo Tarp and Net, Our HDPE liners are made of premium quality high-density polyethylene (HDPE) with the chemically produced polyethylene resin. Our tough geomembrane liners are suitable for all conditions and are UV resistant. However,  Geomembrane liners are also perfect to use at the bottom of a landfill as a landfill liner to stop seepage of waste into the ground. They can also be used as a landfill cover or at the bottom of a sewage treatment plant to stop seepage into the surrounding soil. Our geomembrane liners are used in the mining, agriculture, aquaculture, civil engineering, construction, the petrochemical industry successfully. These liners are perfect for use in landscaping projects and they can also be used for environmental protection and sanitation.

Being environmentally friendly is important in the 21st century. Therefore, It is important to note that while plastic is bad for the environment there are certain types of plastic based products that can actually conserve resources and protect resources without damaging the environment. Geomembrane technology derived synthetics is one of them when used as dam liners, covers and for preventing seepage of dangerous chemicals into our ground and water. Furthermore, potable water is not affected by a geomembrane lining and the quality of the water is actually protected by geomembrane liners. Geomembranes are impermeable and can also be used to contain waste and chemicals. It is especially important in containing petrochemicals during emergency situations so they do not damage the environment.

Cargo Tarp and Net supplies and manufactures high-quality geomembranes, rubber pond liners, and PVC liners. These can be used as farm dam liners as well as for other applications.  At Cargo Tarp and Net, can customize your dam or pond liners to your requirements and always ensure the highest quality control. Our passion lies in producing quality products and providing excellent customer service all the time. Tarps or Tarpaulin is extremely versatile for multiple uses. It is usually a heavy-duty canvas fabric that is treated with chemicals to make it resilient to the elements like wind and water. It can also be made with PVC or other material that is similarly durable. The fabric used will depend on the qualities that the manufacturer wants in the tarp. Most manufacturers will use waterproof fabric but all tarps are designed to be water resistant whether the base fabric is waterproof or not. Nylon is a common choice as it is cost effective. Another common choice is polyethylene fabric, a synthetic fabric that is weather resistant and durable. Tarps go through chemical processes and they can be designed to have specific uses and strengths. Because these products are made chemically, they can be designed with specific uses in mind. The fabric or polyethylene fabric is woven together (different strands sewn in a manner usually common to the weaving process) to create a tarp that is extremely strong and resilient.

Now, to make it even more durable and heavy duty, sheets of the woven and treated tarps is layered and bound together. Sometimes the single layer tarp is left as is if this is required. More often than not sheets of tarp are bound together as this makes a tarp much stronger. The sheets are sewn together and fused with heat at the edges. This usually occurs as the tarp is being sized and cut according to specific measurements. After this, the tarpaulin manufacturer will colour the tarp if necessary and cover it with protective films and wax. The tarp may get another chemical layer to make it even more durable, waterproof and sometimes flame retardant.

The tarp is now ready to fit a specific purpose. The tarp manufacturer will cut a pattern of holes with eyelets into the tarp for ropes or stakes to be used to secure it for any purpose. This makes it easier to use for tents, marquees, covering trucks or any other application.

Cargo hauling is made much easier with tarps as they serve a dual purpose of protecting your cargo as well as securing it to your truck or train. It is natural for cargo tarps to get damaged however and it is essential to repair these tarps as quickly as possible to avoid damage to your cargo.

Tarps have so many uses in construction, transport, gardening, farming and event planning but not many people realize a sheet of tarp is actually one of the handiest things you can have around a house. Having an outdoor function and it unexpectedly starts raining? If you have a tarp on hand you can easily use the eyelets and some rope to attach the tarp to a part of your house as a temporary shelter so you can still use your outdoor space. You can use your tarp to cover items stored outside that need to be out of the rain as well. A tarp is ideal to place over a children’s sandpit so the rain (and pets) do not get to it. You can use one to treat roof leaks. You can use tarp as a ground, floor or carpet cover for simple clean-up after doing light building work, sanding or painting. A tarp can also be used to temporarily cover roofs or anything else during renovations or repairs. You can also make a makeshift shade for plants that require shade or warmth in cold weather. If you really need a screen and can’t get something appropriate for privacy or rain protection, a tarp can be used quite easily. You can use a tarp to protect your car, equipment, bikes etc from the rain and snow if you have no other shelter.

While tarps are very resilient and hardy they do need to be taken care of and cannot be misused just because they are durable. In fact, with proper care, the durability of your tarp will remain and the tarp will be in good condition for many years. Do not leave your tarp near sharp objects or stretch it over anything by applying unnecessary pressure. Warm or hot water can actually compromise the wax coating on your tarp as well so try to avoid them. High-pressure cleaners can also do lasting damage to your tarp. Do not use detergent or bleach on a piece of tarp and ensure you only use a soft bristled brush to clean it. Make sure you also dry your tarp completely after it is wet or in contact with water as constant moisture can lead to mould, fungus and mildew which is difficult to get rid of once spread.

Even if you do your best to take care of your tarp, it can still get damaged. What can you do to repair your tarp if this does happen? If you have a small tiny hole or tear a simple tarp repair tape will help in the short term. Ideally, you want to send it in for proper stitches and bonding with a tarpaulin manufacturer who is experienced with repairing faults as soon as possible. Small tears can lead to big tears, which can eventually make your tarp unusable. It is also advisable to get the areas where there is the most stress (like eyelets and stitching) reinforced regularly. If you find little tears or openings starting up, get your stitching and bonding reinforced. The best place to get your tarp maintained and repaired would be a tarp supplier. There are many tent and tarp suppliers in Johannesburg and Pretoria that manufacture and repair tarpaulins.

Outdoor events and parties are perfect when the weather is warm and the skies are blue. However, it actually takes planning and effort to have a successful outdoor event.

The perfect outdoor venue should be attractive and have essential amenities for your guests such as ample parking, access to a kitchen, tables, chairs and toilets. If the venue does not have any of these essentials, it is always useful to consider hiring them.  Mobile chillers will keep your drinks cool, portable toilets will ensure guests comfort and gas stoves will mean hot food. Look into hiring these items locally. There are plenty of reputable companies that hire out tents and outdoor function essentials in South Africa. Another consideration is tables and chairs. If there are no tables and chairs, you will need to hire them. Tiffany or Wimbledon chairs are usually popular choices at outdoor events. Folding tables are also popular as they are easy to transport and are not bulky. Tent manufacturers actually hire these items out as well. It is cost effective and convenient to get everything from one supplier. It is more cost effective and time efficient because everything is transported at once.

An ideal venue should be a comfortable temperature for guests. Tents can get very hot and stuffy when the temperature rises and it is full of people. Fans or mobile air conditioners will keep your guests cool and circulate air. Hiring these can be expensive but they are worth it, especially in summer.  Make sure you arrange for electricity at your event, you don’t want to be stuck with hot and bothered guests, warm drinks and cold food! Be sure to check if you need an electrical permit for your event.

Another great tip for large outdoor venues is signage. Help your guests to find their way to the portable toilets, event marquee, welcome drinks and parking with prominent signs and arrows stating exactly where everything is.

Parking at outdoor events is another important consideration. Ensure your parking area is a comfortable walking distance from your venue or consider a park and ride option for guests who will not manage a longer walk to your event tent. It is also helpful to look into event security so that unwanted guests or petty criminals do not take advantage of the open space. A few car guards and a security guard at the entrance will ensure your guests and their cars are safe.

If you’re planning a wedding, try to choose an outdoor venue that has access to a building where the event planners, bridal party or groomsmen can have space away from guests to freshen up or take care of things ‘behind the scene’. This will ensure an event that runs smoothly without your guests seeing little things like bridal make up touch-ups or phone calls to your caterer.

The weather is unpredictable so it is best to plan an event that allows for this. A tent is essential for any outdoor event. If you plan on pitching a tent then the ground should be level. It is better to have a large grassy patch or paved area for an outdoor event as well. Ideally, on a large grassy patch, you can comfortably use a peg and pole tent, Bedouin style stretch tent or a marquee tent. On a paved area, you can use a structured aluminium frame tent, alpine tent or stretch tent comfortably. Good quality event tents are manufactured here in South Africa and are for sale or hire. There are even peg and pole tents for sale which are very affordable. The tents use the best quality canvas tent fabric and are even suitable as military tents, refugee tents and function tents. If you’re having a very large function or event it is useful to consider hiring a few smaller tents for catering staff, food prep and your welcome drinks. Draping can also be a nice touch and adds a touch of elegance to your wedding or party. Many tent manufacturers offer this service as well. Remember to make sure that the location you have chosen allows tents to be erected or look into getting a tent permit for the area you have earmarked for your function.

Don’t forget to arrange entertainment. The best entertainment at a party or wedding is non-intrusive and not very loud. This allows for guests to interact comfortably and hear their conversations. It is a good idea to hire a stand-up comedian or a few mime artists to set the tone of your event.

For any large event to run smoothly, planning is essential. Make a list of everything you will need to hire and contact the relevant vendors. Find a caterer and choose your menu and drinks. Now you will need to focus on logistics. How will you transport everything you need to get to the venue? If you are hiring your tables, chairs, crockery and tents from one vendor it simplifies things. They will usually have everything delivered at the same time and have staff available to assist with setting up. Your next concern is your timeline. You will need to determine a timeline that has your function set up and ready for guests half an hour before arrival. These are some of the decisions you will need to make, what time will your tent need to be erected, what time will your tables need to be laid and what time will your food need to be ready to serve? Once you have a plan of action you will need to inform all your service providers of your expectations. If your tent needs to be erected by 9 am so that your tables can be set up by 10 am, they need to be aware of this. Your caterer will need to know what time you expect your meal to be served so they can plan accordingly. With good planning, your function should run smoothly and be enjoyable for you and your guests!

Tarpaulin is considered to be among one of the most versatile materials in the industry which is available to us today. It is predominantly used as a protective measure to shield/ protect objects from hazardous or dangerous conditions. Due to its highly durable nature and strength, tarp is able to withstand various types of outdoor environmental stressors and is therefore a sought after product for both residential and commercial usage. Purchasing tarp however is not as straightforward as it seems and there are factors that you should consider in order to make the most appropriate choice. Currently tarpaulin is being broadly utilized for a vast number of purposes. This in turn makes the product market highly diverse. In order to meet the high demand different types of tarpaulins are manufactured and supplied, each with a specific use for a specific industry.

Various tarpaulin applications

The most common application purposes include the below:

 1. Advertising: Tarp is frequently used by businesses as it is the perfect material for advertising whether it is for billboards or truck fleets. Trucking company owners can capitalize on advertising their business and gaining exposure whilst protecting their cargo along the journey. The high resistance properties of tarp to the natural elements make it a highly effective material for a broad spectrum outdoor advertising.

2. A protective outdoor covering (tent and marquees): The protective qualities of tarpaulin are the reason it is widely used. It is both waterproof and weatherproof depending on the tarp you select. Your selection should be based on the conditions you wish for it to withstand. Tarpaulin is available in three options; regular duty, heavy duty and super heavy duty. The latter two are well suited for colder environments as they provide better resistance against water and wind.
3. Ground or surface cover: Tarpaulin is regularly used as a groundsheet by avid campers. It is placed on the ground and forms a base for the tent to be set up upon. This prevents any moisture from seeping into the tent hereby making it an essential item for outdoor enthusiasts. In keeping with its use as a ground cover, tarp is used in the sporting industry as well. It is frequently utilized in cricket to cover the pitch and surrounding areas during heavy rainfall.
4. A temporary fix in an emergency situation: Such an emergency could be a break or damage in the roof or wall of your home or establishment. The tarp can be used to cover up the break and prevent dust, dirt or water from entering until you are able to get it repaired. It is also ideal for covering fixed objects or furniture during home renovations to prevent any permanent damage to your belongings.

The various types of tarpaulin available:

There tarp options available vary in thickness, size and mesh counts. As a result, each different type is better suited for its own specific function. Some of the most popular tarpaulins are:
1. PVC (Polyvinyl chloride) tarps: These tarps are made from extremely high strength polyester reinforced PVC. PVC tarps are better suited and commonly used in the construction, roofing and trucking industries due to its heavy duty nature and durability. This tarp is not breathable fabric however, it is completely waterproof. It does undergo treatment to protect against UV rays, meaning that the fabric will not easily perish due to constant sun exposure.
2. Poly (Polyethylene) tarps: Poly tarps are fabricated by coating nylon or polyester mesh fabric with polyethylene. This particular type of tarpaulin is the most economical and the most versatile tarp on the market as it can be used for virtually any purpose. Aside from being inexpensive, it is also very easy to maneuver and work with. In comparison to PVC tarp, poly is less environmentally friendly and sturdy.
3. Canvas tarps: Canvas tarp is among the first type of tarp ever manufactured. This tarp type has frequent usage within the agricultural and transportation industry as it is an excellent choice to cover fixed objects which require breathability. Canvas is strong enough to protect your possessions and supplies, and the breathable aspect of it prevents condensation from occurring.

If you require tarpaulin for personal use such as camping, domestic use such as home repairs/ renovations or if you simply need it to protect your cargo during a long journey then you will be glad to know that there is a specification of tarp to meet your requirements.
